BERNARDO GUILLERMO:
WORK: Paperclip Chair

Paperclip Chair was conceived for a "risk"-themed graduate assignment at Pratt Institute. Guillermo's interrpretation of "risk" or challenge for this project was to do more with less. He used as little material as physically possible for a seating solution, thereby producing little or no waste in the process. Made only of 5/16" (8mm) diameter stainless steel rod and seven layers of bamboo veneer, at 1/8" thick (3mm), the physical structure is nonetheless strong enough to support 250 pounds. Although visually rigid, the frame subtley flexes under the sitters weight, a motion akin to the movement of a rocking chair. The chair was selected for exhibition at Brooklyn Designs '05 and was featured in Art Review in December 2005.
